New album “Off the Charts” will be released on 10 May 2024.
This is Paul’s sixth album as a solo artist. The sound is both traditional but also forward-looking as Paul doesn’t live in the past, he just respects his roots. Paul’s songs are a bit more ambitious than most, reflecting his diverse influences that include Bowie, Scott Walker, Nick Cave, Joni Mitchell, Elvis Costello, Ed Kuepper, St Vincent and Kate Bush.
The songs are all based on personal and Australian themes. The fourth track, “Tell ‘Em I Died Game” is a story based on Paul’s great-great-grandfather’s brother-in-law: Frederick Lowry, who was one of the more notorious bushrangers of the mid-1800s.
The last song on the album is the last to be written: “Fickle Mistress”, which is fairly self-explanatory in terms of the fleeting and sometimes cruel nature of time.
Other highlights include:
The first single, “Suzy and Brendan (Don’t Give Up)”, which is not quite a true story, but should ring true enough.
Track two, “Johnny Craves Sanctuary” is the inspiration for the cover art and is also an interesting variation on the theme of the musician who goes down to the crossroads to make a last desperate deal.
Track three “Good Songs Are Never Easy” is a little bit of contemporary social commentary, but you can dance to it.
“Soul of a Poet”, the fifth track, is a largely true story inspired by two creative artists Paul encountered, one last year and one in the early 90s.
Track eight, “Glam the Glam” lives up to its title and is a glam-rock fantasia, every home (and album) should have one. If you can’t dance to this one, consult your GP. Paul will be playing live in 2024 as the mood takes him. Details to come.

I was planning on releasing my sixth album, “Off The Charts”, this year but unfortunately this will no longer be possible, due to illness. Not that I am the one who is ill, I hasten to add.
Six of the songs are mixed, but that leaves five that are in various stages of completion, and I don’t fancy issuing a six track EP as a stop gap.
I had thought that I would be finalising those other five songs this month, but there are things in my life even more important than music.
